But does that mean the payments I made up to now were not secure?

Don’t panic! Of course they were secure! However, due to technological evolution, increasingly more payments are made through new devices, new types of payment services have arisen and the European Union has considered it necessary to introduce new payment security measures to reinforce consumer confidence in a market that is increasingly more dependent on new technologies.

These new security measures have been introduced through the new Payment Services Directive, also known as PSD2, a regulation all payment service providers (such as banks) within the European Economic Area have to comply with.
