Security measures on our cards

We employ a range of security measures, the Bank to protect you against the theft, loss, or unauthorized use of your debit and credit cards.

Purchases in physical stores.

Our cards have an integrated EMV chip with PIN technology.

All Unicaja cards are equipped with an EMV chip, a security element that protects against cloning and reduces the risk of fraud because it validates the holder's data in an encrypted way. Thus, it will only be necessary to type in the PIN when the card is used at brick and mortar stores. It is no longer necessary to sign a receipt to complete the purchase because of this system.

The security of the CHIP of Unicaja cards is updated regularly in accordance with the Security standards indicated by the international card brands VISA and MasterCard. Our cards were issued under the DDA Security Standard. Since 2016, Unicaja MasterCard cards have been issued under the CDA Security Standard:

  • Dynamic data authentication (DDA): Technology that protects against data tampering and card cloning. It is achieved by dynamically signing data using public-key cryptography.
  • Combined data authentication (CDA): A more advanced technology that allows for greater security in data processing.

Online purchases.

  • Virtual card: you will not have to provide the real number on your card, as you can generate a fictitious card number for each purchase, with a spending limit and expiration date that you choose (no more than 2 months). To take advantage of this service, you just have to be a Digital Banking user. We would like to point out that you should not use a virtual card to pay if you need to present the card afterwards to pick up your purchase (for example: tickets to the cinema, shows, etc.). In these cases, we recommend that you use Unicaja's Prepaid Card.
  • Secure commerce: Unicaja adheres to the secure payment systems Verified by Visa and MasterCard Secure Code. An e-commerce business that is registered as a secure business will redirect you to a secure site when making purchases and paying. You will then be required to enter a security code sent to your mobile phone number. This way, only you can use your card to make purchases, and the seller can be sure that you are the legitimate cardholder.
  • Setting up limits per transaction: Monetary limits are placed at Unicaja for the transactions you make with your cards. You won't be able to make any further transactions if these limits are exceeded. If you wish to change these limits, you must do so at one of our branches
  • Configuring the card for online transactions: This service allows you to change the preferences associated to your cards. Check marks have been devised that make it possible to restrict the use of physical cards on the Internet. Thus, you can mark a card so it cannot be used on the Internet, or so it may be used on the Internet on either a temporary or permanent basis. This mark can be changed at branches, ATMs or on the Digital Banking service.
  • Configuring the card for use abroad: You can also change your cards' preferences. Check marks have been devised that make it possible to restrict the use of physical cards abroad. Before travelling abroad, check out your card's mark to avoid problems when using it. You can change this mark at branches, ATMs or on the Digital Banking service.
  • Configuring the card for online use only under Secure Commerce systems . The card can only be used in stores with the highest level of security; you will not be able to use it in stores whose system does not allow payments through the secure commerce system. You must process this request through the Card and ATM Service (Telephone no. +34 952 07 62 60).

Alert Service

If you have contracted Unicaja's Alert Service, every time you perform a transaction with your card, you will receive an alert by SMS and/or e-mail. If you receive a message about a transaction that you have not made, please call +34 952 07 62 60 immediately.

Monitoring transactions

If the Bank's security system detects any suspicious activity on your Card, it will contact you to verify the charges. If the transaction is fraudulent, the Bank will block the transaction or the Card.

Reporting incidents and card blocking

24-hour support telephone line: +34 952 07 62 60 to notify us of any incident or to quickly cancel your cards in the case of loss or theft. You can also notify us of the loss or theft of your card through Digital Banking.

Blocking and unblocking procedures

If one of your payment instruments (card, credential (PIN)) is blocked, you must contact Unicaja at one of our Branches and/or by calling: +34 952 07 62 60.

Advice to protect your cards

To reduce risks of becoming a victim of credit card fraud, we recommend that you take the following precautions:

  • Protect and manage your 4-numbers secret number (PIN)
  • Memorise your PIN and don't share it to anyone.
  • Never leave your PIN written down in your wallet or next to your card, so that it cannot fall into the hands of others in the event of loss or theft.
  • Don't use a PIN that is associated with you, such as your date of birth, ID number, car registration number, etc.
  • Keep it out of sight when entering your PIN to make a purchase..
  • Change your PIN regularly. You can do this at any Unicaja branch or ATM.
  • If you have a credit card, you can adjust the limit according to your needs.
  • Do not lose sight of your card when handing it over to make a purchase.
  • Review your account statements periodically and verify that there are no suspicious transactions. You can review them through Digital Banking, our online banking service.
  • Sign the back of the card on the signature panel as soon as you pick it up.
  • Never give out your credit card number or personal information over the phone unless you are the one initiating the call to make a transaction.

If a new card is sent to your home to replace the old one:

  • Sign it
  • Activate it as soon as possible
  • Destroy the expired card

When using your card in ATMs:

  • Be aware of the people around you
  • After completing the transaction, store your card and money in a safe place immediately.
  • Before going to the ATM, prepare any paperwork or documents you might need. This will minimize the time you'll need to spend at the ATM.

If you lose your card, it is stolen or used without your permission, let us know as soon as you find out by calling +34 952 07 62 60 and we will block it to ensure it cannot be used fraudulently. You can also block it yourself on the Digital Banking service.
